BCME has been around for just on half a century. The publication has showcased the building and construction industry for all that time but there
are occasions when people still ask what the name
means, and we have to spell it out: Building, Construction,
Materials & Equipment.
I sometimes think the building and design game just can’t
get enough of acronyms. We’re acronymphomaniacs.
Every government department and every industry press
release brings another breathless acronym into the world.
Hands up if you have any difficulty with RPL, NABERS,
GBCA, CPO, ICANZ, FSC, OE* just for starters.
It’s not new, of course. “The Guinness Book of World
Records” used to claim that the longest acronym in
English was the 22-letter ADCOMSUBORDCOMPHIBSPAC
or Administrative Command, Amphibious Forces, Pacific
Fleet, Subordinate Command. You could, if you wish, prefix
it with USN, since the US Navy dreamed it up.
Here at BCME we’re striking back in a small way by
letting the magazine define its purpose more clearly.
In this issue – strongly focused on everything green
– we’ve started to spell out the areas we showcase.
On page 22 you’ll find the start of the “Building &
Construction: Materials” section; on page 38 there’s
“Building & Construction: Equipment”. Hope it helps.
