The Ronstan Façade team understands the key design
considerations of climbing plants, engineering challenges
and the benefits of thermal control in the construction of
“green walls”. With species selected, the façade must be
designed around the plants. How much room the plant
needs, its proximity to the wall (on or off the face), its
growth patterns and future dead weight, leaf density and
wind loads, all affect the support structure design.
“Green walls” bring unusual
questions into the design equation.
Ronstan Tensile Architecture’s catenary lighting application
in Melbourne’s Federation Square illuminates the area to
extend its usable hours, pinpoints landscape features and
creates a unique and inviting ambience in the process.

Museo del Acero Horno 3 was formerly the Number
3 blast furnace for the Fundidora de Monterrey steel
mill in Mexico. Ronstan Architectural was contracted to
supply stainless steel pre-stressed cables for supporting
the helical staircase and handrail. The design of the
cables and style of end terminations was the subject
of considerable design development works, the end
combination critical to the satisfaction of stringent
aesthetic and structural considerations.
Mexico’s “helical staircase” seems to float in mid-air.
Abu Dhabi Corniche was redeveloped in 2004 and is a
vibrant space offering opportunities for passive and active
recreational use. In the evenings the cooling breeze off the
Arabian Gulf sees people flock from hotels and places of
business to restaurants or to simply walk the promenade.
Central to the landscape is a series of tensioned fabric
structures designed and built by Structurflex, a long-time
Ronstan Architectural partner.
